The Grief Recovery Method
The Grief Recovery Method® Outreach Program is an action program for moving beyond death, divorce, and other losses. Group participants learn about the myths surrounding grief, including time heals all wounds, replace the loss, grieve alone, be strong for others and bury your feelings. Participants also discover that their feelings are normal and natural. The problem is that we have been socialized to believe that these feelings are abnormal and unnatural. This powerful and dynamic experience is for those who have experienced loss from death, divorce or the end of a relationship, loss of a career, loss of trust, loss of faith, loss of safety, loss of health, and any other major loss.
The program is generally presented in a 12-week group format and uses The Grief Recovery Handbook written by John W. James and Russell Friedman. The group and group facilitator also provide a safe environment for participants to share their thoughts and feelings. We look at our old beliefs about dealing with loss, what losses have affected our lives, and take new actions that often lead us toward discovery and completion of any unfinished business. People may say that you have to let go and move on with your life, yet they don't tell you what you need to do in order to accomplish that. This program not only makes that possible, but provides partnerships and guidance to ensure that it can happen.

When a traumatic death occurs, such as the death of a child, not just any counselor, physician, nurse, clergy, or therapist will understand the complexities and challenges of grieving family members. It is critical to find a provider who specializes in traumatic grief. An effective provider will walk with you, help you connect with your feelings, and help you discover ways to cope with the overwhelming sense of loss.
Mind-Body Skills Groups
Studies show that between 60% to 90% of all physician visits are due to stress-related complaints. We live in a fast-paced society where stress comes at us from a number of different directions including chronic illness, jobs, or family. We cannot eliminate stress, but we can take an active role in managing how we respond to it. Mind-body skills are scientifically-validated techniques that can teach you stress management techniques, improve personal coping skills, and enhance a person's capacity for relaxation, self-care and self-awareness. Techniques include meditation, guided imagery, mindful eating, biofeedback, autogenic training and the use of drawings, journals and movement to express thoughts and feelings.
Groups are intentionally small, usually 8 to 10 participants, to encourage a safe, supportive and intimate atmosphere where participants can focus on personal development. They are also educational and fun! Groups are usually two hours per week for 8 to 10 weeks and they are based on the model designed and taught internationally through Dr. James S. Gordon's Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC. Formation of groups is ongoing.
